Set in the middle of a forested park, the Chapel Hill Public Library takes advantage of its natural surroundings to provide a place to study, read, and engage. The Chapel Hill Public Library is the most heavily used public library per capita in North Carolina; thus, a major expansion was needed to meet demand for library services. CRA, in conjunction with Robert A.M. Stern Architects, designed a series of modern additions to the existing facility to expand reading areas, the children’s library, and community spaces. The interior is highlighted by a large, light-filled reading room facing the forest to the south. Just off the main entry plaza is a conference center used by clubs, municipal commissions, and committees. The facility is certified LEED Silver.
