The Carmichael Wellness Center addition reimagines NC State's existing recreation facilities and creates a modern hub for student fitness and wellness. In collaboration with HOK, the $34M glassy, open facility adds approximately 90,000 SF of new fitness rooms and high-performance spaces, as well as meeting spaces, student lounge areas, and administrative offices. The complex features climbing walls, weight training areas, cardio facilities, and personal training spaces, including a running track and turfed sprinting lanes. “A building is a building, but it’s what happens inside that really impacts students. We want to support students so they can be successful,” said Erick Hawkes, Director of Wellness and Recreation at NC State, noting that the facility reflects a broader shift toward supporting all dimensions of a student and providing more than just a traditional gym experience.
